MINNEAPOLIS, MN- August 2, 2019 – For decades, immunologists have been trying to train the transplant recipient’s immune system to accept transplanted cells and organs without the long-term use of anti-rejection drugs. New University of Minnesota preclinical research shows that this is now possible.

In a study published in Nature Communications, researchers at the University of Minnesota Medical School’s Department of Surgery and Schulze Diabetes Institute, collaborating with colleagues at Northwestern University, have maintained long-term survival and function of pancreatic islet transplants despite complete discontinuation of all anti-rejection drugs on day 21 after the transplant. This study was performed in a stringent preclinical transplant setting in nonhuman primates, one step away from humans.

Clinicians and scientists from around the world, specializing in islet cell research will meet in Oxford this June when the annual IPITA congress will be held in the UK for the first time.

The IPITA (the International Pancreas And Islet Transplant Association) 16th International Congress takes place from 20-23 June.

DRWF is proud to be supporting the event, as it has done over the last 10 years, in line with the charity’s commitment to islet cell research and transplants all around the world.

The scientific program for the event will cover all aspects of whole pancreas and islet transplantation (both research and clinical practice), with a specific focus on developing increased collaboration between the whole pancreas and islet transplant communities with the aim of moving towards an integrated, patient-centred approach to beta-cell replacement.

The event will provide the next generation of clinicians and scientists working in the field of beta-cell replacement with a forum to explore the full range of novel ‘state of the art’ technologies relevant to beta-cell replacement.

Dear Friend of Diabetes Research,

DRWF is proud to support and be a part of #GivingTuesday.  I hope you are doing well.  I hope that you were able to participate in World Diabetes Day earlier this month.  It was a wonderful day uniting all those with diabetes and loved ones together in our quest to raise awareness of diabetes and its complications.  The end of the year is coming to a close and so are our funding commitments to many researchers.  Each researcher relies on our funding to continue their work with no delays.

We have a heavy need.

Your decision to send a special leadership gift of $12, $25, $100 or whatever you can afford today will help make it possible for our funding of state-of-the-art research and educational programs to continue.

The millions of Americans with diabetes, young and old, have a right to a chance at good health. Lives stopped short by complications to diabetes is not a fact we can sit idly by and accept.

One of our top research priorities is in islet cell transplantation.  Our medical and scientific advisory board is fully committed to this fast-track effort to assemble the very best researchers to concentrate on this very unique idea of transplanting insulin-making cells into patients.

No one is safe from diabetes.  I'm counting on everyone I talk to, to give from the heart for the need is real.

Sincerely,

Andrea Stancik

Executive Director
